Patty Carlson began playing the piano when she was 21 years old.  Patty learned by closely listening to music, memorizing individual parts, and finding the sequence of tones of the music on the piano keyboard. After several years learning to play the piano, Patty attended Mt. Hood Community College for two semesters to learn how to write music down.

Patty chose to move to Aspen Colorado, to search for work as a film score composer. Marty Stouffer offered Patty her first opportunity to compose and produce the music for his PBS “Wild America” series.  Patty’s reputation as a film score composer rapidly spread throughout the Aspen community. Patty composed and produced music for films aired on ABC, PBS, and Turner Broadcasting in addition to working with Marty Stouffer films for over 12 years.

At the same time Patty was composing and producing music for films, she began to teach her understanding of the “language of music.” Rapid acceleration of composition and performance ability demonstrated by her students attracted many local and celebrity clients, and the news media. Patty was interviewed about her methods by ABC News and CNN’s “Looking Up” show.

Producers from Los Angeles approached Patty about filming her methods of teaching in a video.  Patty’s “Play the Piano Overnight” video was voted “Best Music Instruction Video” by Billboard magazine. The “Play the Piano Overnight” infomercial broadcast internationally for almost three years selling over 350,000 videos.

THE NUMERIC LANGUAGE OF MUSIC®

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

In a live radio interview, Patty talks about leaving her phenomenal career success to pursue understanding why her method of teaching music was producing extraordinary changes in student’s lives. Unprecedented performance acceleration resembled stories of acquired savant syndrome.  Math and reading grades rapidly increased from D’s and failing to 98%. Handwriting increased from the worst in the class to the best in the class.  Similar results were reported when tested with Special Needs children.

The extraordinary results Patty witnessed in her private practice compelled her to test her theory the Numeric Language of Music® may be the innate, inherent language of the human brain, functioning in a simiar way to computer code. Testing the program one hour twice a week with a client with advanced Alzheimer’s disease, symptoms reversed within 30 days.  In the following video, Donna Descateaux, the facility’s resident cognitive rehab and brain injury specialist, and daughter of the client, speaks about what she witnessed while monitoring Patty’s test.

Patty pursued her private research specifically focused on children on the autism spectrum.  Paul Melvin, a contractor working at Patty’s home, mentioned his son was on the autism spectrum.  Patty told Paul of her work and offered to include Max in her research.  It was over a year before Paul eventually contacted Patty and arranged for her to work with his son.

Max responded so well to the information that Patty was stunned. Regardless of the complexity of musical structures, Max absorbed the information and translated the information to immediate fluent performance ability.  Regardless of how much she presented, his retention and fluency of performance was immediate. Recently, Paul contacted Patty to ask if he could contribute his personal gratitude in a testimony to help her reach more parents of children on the autism spectrum.

PAUL MELVIN / ABOUT MAX & PATTY

Patty Carlson and I met in 2015 when she hired my company to come perform repairs at her house. She handed me her business card for her contact info and I curiously asked her what was the meaning of her company name “Piano Logic”. She very kindly spent the next several minutes explaining to me the unique teaching method that she had cultivated over the years and the incidental and surprising therapeutical impact that it was having with people of all ages with different disorders. I was moved by her enthusiasm and passion for the benefits that she was witnessing with her students. At that point, I opened up to Patty about my 15 year old son Max, who is on the autism spectrum, and asked her if there was any way that I could have her work with him. She enthusiastically replied yes. Because of some professional and personal complications on my end, it was over a year before we were able to have my son’s first lesson.

Patty’s first visit to our home was a visit that I will likely never forget. I could tell very quickly that something transformational for my son was taking place. Anyone that has a child with autism can tell you how incredibly challenging it can be to capture their attention, maintain it, and keep them enthused and engaged. Patty did all of that with incredible ease and professionalism. I was truly blown away and knew instantly that I was witnessing something very special. I have spent every year of my son’s
life addressing issues related to autism and trying so many things to brighten his life and to broaden his horizon. It takes a lot to move me, but it was not uncommon for my eyes to well up a bit as I was listening from the next room over. It wasn’t that I was just proud that my son was making rapid progress at playing the piano, it was more of me hearing my son ask Patty questions and showing a desire to better his new skills that he was discovering. It was the laughter that I heard coming from them both, the look of pride on his face after Patty left as he played for me what he had just learned, and the random beautiful sounds of the piano playing unexpectedly at any given time. I was witnessing the beginning of a bright new chapter in my son’s life.

Once again, professional obligations prevented us from continuing on after 6 lessons in 6 weeks, but the impact was profound. Max’s self esteem rose in a very healthy way, he had a new found confidence that was ushering out his negative feelings of himself. Patty brilliantly showed him a glimpse of what he was capable of. Her methods unlocked a code that I believe taught his mind new pathways to achieve results that he likely perceived unattainable. Max sees possibilities now where before he may have only seen obstacles with no desire to pursue. I spend more time with Max than any other family member or friend, and I can clearly see where Patty’s mark is on his timeline of life. What a wonderful directional turn that has been! I am forever grateful to Patty Carlson for her teaching methods and her genuine sincere desire to help others.

Sincerely,
Paul Melvin

Continuing with her private practice, Patty learned the program had profound effects with Special Needs Children.  Children with ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, behavioral problems, social problems and children on the Autism Spectrum demonstrated rapid improvement in multiple areas.

Patty felt she could teach other people how to use the program, either as individuals, or to help their children or loved ones. The fundamentals of the program were always the same.  Seven musical tones, seven basic forms of music vocabulary, specific fingers used to play the vocabulary from numerically designated points on the piano keyboard.

At the same time Patty was finishing her written program, she received an e-mail from a woman in California. Leanne was asking if Patty thought her program could help her son. Anthony was a meth addicted baby she and her husband adopted.  At sixteen, he was struggling mightily with math.

Patty asked if the family would be willing to test the new instructional program to see if the information would work independently from her personal involvement.  The family agreed to follow the instructions exactly.  Piano for Special Needs was to be played exclusively for one month.  Since Anthony was a teenager,  Patty would send the Piano Logic Program, Part 1 followed by the Piano Logic Program, Part 2 after the first 30 day program was completed.

“Anthony will say that Piano Logic helped him with math, but he sees the math progress most especially in the 3D architectural world in which he is currently studying.    Simple addition and subtraction are no longer impossible mountains to climb. He seems to have improved in carrying information from one area of the brain to another.” David Cooper

THE ANTHONY COOPER STORY

December 2019

I am Anthony’s father, David.

Anthony was a drug baby that we adopted at eight weeks.  His birthmother was using meth and barbiturates while he was in utero.  Anthony went thru withdrawal symptoms as an infant and the exposure to the drugs left him seriously handicapped, mentally.  At about the third grade, we took him to Loma Linda University Medical Center to be tested since we were beginning to see signs of problems in his learning patterns and his development.  As a result of their weeks long testing, LLUMC told us that Anthony was unable to use his frontal cortex completely and that his brain was working overtime just to try and do the 3rd grade material.    He was diagnosed as borderline deficient and we were told that he would probably never get out of the 5th grade.
We were a bit non plussed by this since we could see that Anthony had some very tangible skills, mostly artistic, and was a very good reader.  Thus, we assume the report wasn’t necessarily accurate and proceeded to create for him his own IEP to maximize what we saw as his strengths.  During this time, he was enrolled in a private, parochial school and the school allowed us, after some haggling, to customize his education to fit his abilities.   We then happened upon a seminar on the internet given by Meryl Lipton from The Rush Institute in Chicago that dealt with non-verbal learning disorders. My wife and I were intrigued since Dr. Lipton’s descriptions seemed to match up quite closely to what we were seeing in Anthony.  We reached out to her, and met her, along with Anthony.  After an hour or so with him, she indicated the best way for us to proceed was to have him actually tested and diagnosed by a trained professional.
We took Anthony to her referral, John Watkins, in Santa Monica, for extensive testing.  Upon completion he told us that Anthony was autistic, and not slight so.  The prognosis wasn’t great, but was better than what we experienced at LLUMC.
Also, the research on drug, and especially meth babies, was beginning to emerge.  It appears that meth babies tend to mature late and that by their early thirties they may actually be able to live by themselves and cope with life.  Anthony was about 11 years old at this point.
We continued with Anthony’s IEP and actually were able to help him to receive his diploma from high school.  Math will never be an easy subject for him, but he did well enough to get through high school.
It was at this point that we ran into Patty Carlson and her program.  She wanted to work with Anthony and would allow us to monitor the program and report back to her.  She sent the manuscripts to us.  Anthony took to the program quite quickly and seemed to be very involved and engaged.  We didn’t even have to remind him to do the exercises. He was self-driven.

Anthony was not ready to go away for college yet, so he enrolled in the local community college where he mostly ended up taking voice and musical theatre classes, which he excelled at.  His entry scores for math were extremely low.  However, after months of working with the Piano Logic manuscripts, he was able to pass a winter break math class that year.  Anthony will say that Piano Logic helped him with math, but he sees the math progress most especially in the 3D architectural world in which he is currently studying.    Simple addition and subtraction are no longer impossible mountains to climb. He seems to have improved in carrying information from one area of the brain to another.  From my perspective, I haven’t seen a huge increase in math ability, but I have been totally awed by the talent it unlocked in him musically.  Before this program Anthony was unable to read music and his experimenting with music was mostly plinking away at the keys of a piano.  However, as he got deeper into the program he became very good at playing musical pieces by ear, at first, and then later learned to read AND write music.  He is composing songs, music, and lyrics for his college theatre as well as having one of his works performed and recorded by a Disney production company. This past summer he was hired to play the music for the senior class graduation.  He has truly unlocked something special in himself through Piano Logic.
Anthony is in his junior year of college and living on his own two hours from home.  He is doing things that we mostly dreamed he would be able to do.  He will tell you that the most important thing he took to college with him was his keyboard.  He, to this day, returns to the Piano Logic exercises time and time again as he feels they help him to sort things out in his brain.  He says that it helps him to think more logically.
We have high hopes that Anthony will be able to continue on with his life as an active and productive member of society, and in no small part, that will be because of the help he got from Patty Carlson and the Piano Logic program.

August, 2019 Patty was introduced to a local family looking for help for their special needs children.  Eleven year old son, Kaden, was performing at a third grade level at fifth grade. Three year old son Cale had been diagnosed with apraxia.

The family gave Patty a flyer they produced to help people understand how Apraxia affects their son.

Unfamiliar with the term, Patty researched Apraxia reading the following:

SEARCH: Childhood Apraxia of Speech, or CAS –

“CAS is sometimes called verbal dyspraxia or developmental apraxia. Even though the word “developmental” is used, CAS is not a problem that children outgrow.”       American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Can apraxia be overcome?                             “Some children with developmental speech disorders outgrow them. But CAS is not outgrown and there is no cure”.  kars4kids.org

Curious to see if Piano for Special Needs program would benefit the children, Patty suggested they purchase an inexpensive keyboard and follow the program’s directions. The Piano for Special Needs program was the only program used with the younger son, Cale.

Approximately thirty days later, Patty offered eleven year old Kaden the Piano Logic program Part 1 and Part 2 on DVD to study at home.

Three months after providing the programs to the family, Patty received a letter regarding Cale and Kaden’s progress.

“Cale is expressing himself with words that I am able to understand. Not only can I understand him but a stranger could actually make out 70% of what he was saying. It felt like such a big leap in just 3 short months of doing this program. His teachers were so impressed with being able to understand his needs instead of playing a guessing game where everyone would just end up frustrated.” Cale’s mother.

Cale’s grandmother added         “I can understand almost everything he says now.” (continued below)

“My oldest son (Kadan) started out 5th grade at a 3rd grade level in basically everything. During the first parent teacher conference they were showing me where he had started and where he needs to be by the end of the year but did not seem very hopeful in him being able to catch up. Boy did he prove them wrong! He went from reading at a 3.4 reading level to a 5.8 in just 3 months. His math teacher even said that he has never seen a student improve in math so quickly and was so impressed with him.” Kaden’s mother
